Week 1: Six Posts In and We're Just Now to Introductions

and welcome to my blog!

My name is Chase Clark, and I am a senior at OU. I am pursuing a degree in Film and Media Studies and will hopefully be able to pursue something in the film world soon.

A little bit about me - I like movies. I think that's pretty obvious. My favorite filmmakers are The Coen Brothers and Quentin Tarantino. I'm also big fan of music. I dabble at the guitar and suck quite significantly. I enjoy the smooth sounds of Red Hot Chili Peppers above all else, but am also a major enthusiast of old Motown and 60s classics (The Beatles, Beach Boys, The Four Seasons, etc.). I'm quite the reader, as well. I'm a huge Tolkien nerd and have read Lord of the Rings annually since I was in the 5th grade (I'm a little inconsistent with The Silmarillion). I'll read anything, though. I'm also a lover of C.S. Lewis, Douglas Adams, and Mark Twain.

I don't do a lot of extracurricular stuff because of my school and work schedule. I'm in 18 hours this semester, on top of 35 hours of work a week. Not to brag or anything, but I'm dying. Plus, I'm heavily involved in my church's college ministry. We only meet on Mondays at 8pm, but its almost a full-time deal. I don't have a lot of time for much else, regrettably.

I love mythologies of all kinds. I'm partial to Greek, Norse and Celtic stuff (and I am one of those people who consider Tolkien's work to be a mythology, so I'm really partial to that), but I enjoy it all and am always willing to learn more.

  1. It is nice to meet you Chase! I must say that I like your taste in music and books! As you read in my intro, I am partial to the fantasy stuff but I do have a soft spot for certain classics like To Kill A Mocking Bird by Harper Lee, and a few of Mark Twain's classics. I have yet to read Lord of the Rings, but it is on my bucket list! My best friend is one of the biggest LotR nerds I have ever met so if I ever need to know anything about it I usually just go and as her... I am also amazed that you can function with how busy you are! I am very impressed I must say! I am excited to see more of your posts throughout the semester and I wish you the best of luck in your film career!

  2. Hi there, Chase! Sounds like you have good tastes in just about everything. :) Especially Celtic mythology since that's my favorite! Plus your major sounds really exciting. Kudos to you for being able to manage your time the way you are. I was going to take 18 hours this semester but decided not to because I'm not very good at time management. I want to be strong like yooou!

Hope you have a great semester!

  3. Hello Chase! I must say, you have great taste in both music and literature! I am a huge fan of the Red Hot Chili Peppers as well, and I grew up listening to the classics such as the Beetles as well.
I also must say that I admire how hard of a worker you are. I have no idea how you are able to do that much. I am enrolled in 15 hours, work 20, and have a small internship but I doubt that adds up even close to the amount of work you're doing this semester. May the odds be ever in your favor. It was great getting to know a little bit about you and I look forward to reading your blog!

Have a great semester, and don't stress too much!!!

  4. It was so nice to finally read your introduction, Chase - I had learned a lot of these things already, but now I get to see it all put together! And I just have to say... DOUGLAS ADAMS. It still makes me cry to think about him dying so young... but what a legacy he left behind. I love ALL of his books, and I have audio recordings of them read by Douglas Adams himself. So, even if he is no longer with us, I get a bit of the ghost of Douglas Adams when I listen to those books, which I do often. Whenever I need to listen to something to make me feel better, Douglas Adams is right at the top of the list. It is so nice to meet another fan!

As a kind of memorial to Douglas Adams, I met a randomizer with quotes from his Hitchhiker books... you might like it. :-)

  5. Hi Chase, it was nice to read a little bit about you! I think that a film and media studies major sounds very interesting and that it would be something that is constantly changing and evolving. With a major like that I feel that you will always be able to stay interested in your work because of the differentiation between each job!

  6. Hey Chase!
First off, your title it hilarious. I bet you can do some pretty neat stuff with film and media, your major sounds fun (but a lot of hard work too, I'm sure). Props to you for balancing that much work and school, that takes a lot of discipline! Learning to play the guitar has been on my bucket list for quite some years now, I'm hoping I can accomplish that someday! I wish you luck with graduation and pursuing a career in the film world.

  7. Hi Chase! Nice to meet you. Being a film and media studies major sounds like a lot of fun! Do you want to write, direct, and/or act? All of them sound like an adventure to me. I love the Red Hot Chili Peppers too! I saw them in concert when they were here in October 2012. I had never thought of The Lord of the Rings being considered a mythology before, but I really like that idea! The world-building is so developed and real. I could certainly see Tolkien's work being included in a mythology class like ours in the future.

  8. Chase, I am so impressed by this amazing balance you lead of your work and school schedule! That is amazing! I know I could never do that. Mark Twain has some of the most amazing stories. We used to have an audio CD that we would listen to on car trips. It had some of the funniest stories I have ever heard in my life. Good luck on the rest of the semester! I hope to read more of your stories soon!

  9. Hey Chase, I absolutely love the Mrs. Doubtfire picture. It was one of my favorites as a child. Quentin Tarantino is also a favorite of mine as well. I have an Inglorious Basterds and Django Unchained posters hung up in my living room. I love the way he makes those into spaghetti westerns. I am also a senior, I have a couple of friends who are twins, that are also film and media and studies. Hopefully we will see your name on the big screen soon!

  10. Hi Chase, Lol coming onto your profile and seeing that picture of Robin Williams in Mrs Doubt fire really brings back great childhood memories. Growing up it was one of my favorite movies. I admire your hard work as I too am having to balance school, work and being a family man. So it good to know that I am not alone in this one. Good luck with school and life in general. Keep up the hard work bro.

  11. Hey Chase! Thank you so much for your comment on my storytelling post "The Liver." I really appreciate you taking the time to leave me feedback! It sounds like you are really busy this semester and have a lot on your plate. I only work around 20 hours a semester and that is plenty for me, I can't imagine working 35! I don't have time to sit and watch TV, so I really don't know how you do it. I'm sure your future self will thank you for your time and effort in school and in work during your college career. Good luck with everything!

  12. Hi Chase! It has been great reading your introduction. I loved that you picked a meme from a movie to welcome us to your blog and then tell us how much you love movies! I laughed at the sentence, "I don't want to brag or anything, but I'm dying." I feel the exact same way! I am involved in so many different things, plus work, plus school, and it is so hectic. I am also involved in my church's college ministry. I think it's great that you've got your priorities in line!

  13. Chase, I'm a movie enthusiast too!! You name a movie, I most likely have it!! Quentin Tarantino is AMAZING, but so are James Cameron and especially Martin Scorsese. I adore gangster movies too!!

Your picture of Robin Williams in Mrs. Doubtfire is perfect. Too bad he didn't know how much joy he brought to the lives of people who had never even met him. COMEDIC GENIUS.

I'm also in complete agreement with your music choices. My iPod has literally every genre on it from classical to country, the early blues to Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Good luck with your film career. I look forward to seeing your name on the credits of some new movie and receiving a red carpet invitation to see the premiere with all the hollywood stars!!! Thanks in advance :) lol

  14. Chase, you certainly fit the description of someone I would find interested in pursuing a film and media career. You appear to be quite knowledgeable in all the areas of film, music, books, etc. Which is pretty nifty! I love to read, but honestly have not ventured much into the genres you are interested in! I think it really cool how passionate you are about a lot of the things you read and watch! I think you'll definitely find an enjoyable career in this area!

Also, after reading some of your work thus far, I think you also have quite a talent in writing. I look forward to reading more of your work and wish you luck in surviving this semester and those 18 hours!!!

  15. Hey Chase, your titles are nothing short of spectacular. I think it is becoming more common in our generation (and those younger) to have such a broad appreciation of music. I worked at a movie theatre in high school and it was one of my favorite jobs, so I also have an appreciation of movies. Hopefully I'll go see one of your movies in a few years! You sound so busy, good luck with all that!

  16. Chase, you seem like a really fun person. I can tell from the funny titles that you have a good sense of humor, haha. I also like movies. Dang. Did we just become best friend?!  Tolkien is wonderful. I’m a big reader too. You must be pretty darn busy to keep up with work and school. Sounds like you don’t end up with a lot of free time, but hey it will pay off in the end, for sure! It is wonderful to meet you and I am looking forward to reading more of your work because it definitely has been fun to do.

  17. Hi Chase, I decided to start on my week 15 thanks. So I just wanted to thank you this semester for your honest feedback on my work. It really helped getting feedback from our fellow class mates. I think you have done a great job so far. I hope that the rest of the semester works out great for you.

  18. Hi Chase,
You might know my roommate Ty, he's also a senior Film studies major. Anyway I loved the Mrs. Doubtfire picture, my buddies and I almost always say "Hellllloooo" like Robin did anytime we haven't seen each other in a while. I also feel you about learning guitar, I play the banjo but I'm no where near where I want to be skill wise. Good luck with your last part of school and getting into the film industry.

Really awesome intro to you! I'm glad you find time to read in your busy schedule, it's a way to escape. I love Mark Twain too! You have quite a large load on your shoulders this semester…good grief! I wish you the best in everything with film and good luck with the rest of your semester!
